Rain Barrels

rain_barrel.jpgEvery spring many people experience major problems with their drainage and have water concerns. Water is a valuable resource; Grant & Power Landscaping wants to share with you an alternative to sending some of this precious resource to the storm water sewers. Use the rain that falls on your property and capture it in a rain barrel or link them together to capture more. This simple solution will reduce the amount of storm water runoff; it relieves stress on the natural water systems and allows fewer pollutants to collect in rivers, streams and eventually the oceans. Better water management systems will benefit you and the environment.

Every summer, the Conservation Foundation estimates that an average homeowner uses 40% of their water consumption in the yard! Did you know that on a 2,000 square foot roof, one inch of rainfall generates 1,250 gallons of reusable water? Rain barrels are large containers placed at the end of a downspout to capture rainwater. There is a spigot at the bottom of the barrels for easy access. Rain barrels are an effective and easy way to store rainwater. The rainwater is very rich in nutrients, reducing the need for fertilizers. Save the rainwater and use it to water indoor and outdoor potted plants, vegetable gardens, or attach soaker hoses to water nearby plant beds. Refill your outdoor water feature or use it to wash your car. Use your collected rainwater during dry periods during the summer months. Rain barrels are a simple, efficient method for any homeowner to collect and recycle rainwater, lowering the demand and costs of municipal water. With the rising cost of municipal water and strict watering schedules, rain barrels are a low-cost investment.
